I am a multiply published novelist and short story writer. I sold my first short story when I was twenty-two, and my first novel when I was twenty-four. I was actively pursuing a writing career throughout high school, which makes my experience particularly accessible to aspiring writers at that age. As a minority and as a woman, I can also speak to the intersection of marginalized identities and the pursuit of a career that has been historically dominated by white men (though of course that has greatly changed in the last several decades). I have been published both by small and large presses, have changed agents, and have been a member for the last five years of one of the premier writing groups in NYC (Altered Fluid). All of this gives me a unique perspective on writing as a career and as a vocation.

For the last five years, I have regularly participated in panel discussions at several prestigious conventions, including Readercon, World Science Fiction Convention, World Fantasy Convention, Wiscon and New York Comic Con. Outside of conventions, I have participated in discussions for adults and teens at many schools, libraries and bookstores around New York City, including the Center for Fiction and Elizabeth Irwin High School. I have given solo school presentations for elementary, middle and high school students at National Cathedral School and AIM Academy elementary school in Washington, DC.

New York City in the 1920s

This talk discusses the historical research that informed my novel Moonshine. The twenties began the era that we think of as truly modern, and New York City was at the vanguard of the social and political movements that defined the period. This talk would focus on the roles of women, immigrants and the changing values of the time. I also discuss fashion, politics and the neighborhoods of the city, with an engaging visual component and ample time for questions. In the end, I relate this survey of the twenties in New York City to larger issues of researching and writing historical novels.

How to write a novel

This talk is designed to appeal to young, creative students who have considered fiction writing but not be entirely sure how to tackle something as long or complex as a novel. This will cover at a basic level the genres, structures and writing styles of a modern novel, and will conclude with a general discussion of the business of writing (critique groups, agents, publishers, etc.) My aim with this talk is to give students practical information and inspiration—exactly what I would have benefited from at that age. This will include a visual component.

Fiction writing workshop

I am also available, with sufficient preparation time, to hold a fiction workshop with a group of students who have pre-submitted works of 5,000 words or less (narrative non-fiction would also be accepted). The students will read each other’s work and we will discuss them in the critique session of 1 to 2 hours. The aim is to help students develop skill with giving and receiving constructive criticism, as well as providing some external motivation to push themselves as writers.

***

In addition to the foregoing, I can tailor my presentations to the needs of the school. Other possibilities include speaking more generally on my career path as a writer, why I have chosen the genres of young adult and speculative literature, race and gender issues in my particular fields, and where to find inspiration.
